TISSUE CULTURE FACILITY

The Ahmednagar district has one of the states largest area under sugarcane cultivation which is why also the district has the largest number of cooperative sugar factories. The sugarcane crop presently is facing serious problems due to declining productivity due to various reasons among which the poor quality of planting material is the biggest contributing factor. The availablity of micropropagation techniques for sugarcane has provided enough scope to circumvent the declining productivity status. The KVK in veiw of the problems and needs of the farming community has established the Tissue Culture Facility for mass multiplication of disease free seedlings for supply to the farmers at reasonable cost.
The present capacity of the existing facility is 10,000 plants which will be further expanded once the culture media is standardised for local enviroment.
The facility also has the Polyhouse for hardening and acclimitizing the tissue cultured seedlings to the outer environmental conditions.
The KVK has plans to further expand the facility to make available other plants of economic importance in the region using the tissue culture facility.
