Farm Development
For the KVK, cultivating the barren stretch of 18.10 ha. land at Rajuri village, 4 kms away from the office seemed to be a distant dream. Literally, a good-for-nothing moor full of tall grasses, weeds and intermediate bunds looked a stupendous task to carry out initial work. Bestowed with poor water table and meagre rains, growing a model crop cafeteria seemed to be a formidable objective. The levelling work began in the harsh summer of April,93 with only Soybean, Redgram to be grown in the then Kharif as a rain-fed crop. Yielding poor returns from this crop, the KVK was left with no objective but to dig a 45 ft. deep well in 1994 that could hardly harness the under water streams but could only serve as a large reservoir. After a careful planning and analysis of soil types, the farm was divided into three major blocks of Horticulture, Agronomy and Agro Forestry. This was followed by planting dryland horticultural crops on 4 ha. grown in the district which was completed in 1994. Similarly, agronomical crops as rain-fed crops were grown and forest trees plantation was done in the same year.
As the demand for meeting the water requirement of the crops grow, there was an increasing need for a borewell that later could give out only 1" water. The water requirement still not sufficing, drip irrigation system was only the last option. Now the horticulture block of 15 acres is fully operational on drip irrigation system.
With the increasing need to generate farm resources the KVK made an earnest request to the Govt. of Maharashtra to provide the permission to lift the irrigation water from the Pravara Left Bank Canal 3 K.M. away. The request was well taken and the Department of Irrigation granted the permission to lift the water from the canal. The construction of the pipeline was completed in January 2000. Now the KVK has full 50 acres farm under the irrigation with major coverage of Sugarcane under cultivation.
The farm is a repository of the refinement and assessment of the technological packages before they are finally passed on for the farmers. The farm presently has following production units as :
1. Agronomy Block
:Seed production of various crops grown in the district.
2. Horticulture Block
:Refinement of practices for different horticultural crops of the district.
3. Forestry Block
:Natural resource management and conservation of ecology.
4. Poultry Unit
:Training and revenue generation.
